3. For the First 6 Weeks of School
- “Getting to Know your Readers” provides a guide and protocol for conducting interviews with students about their reading skills and habits during the first 10 days of school. Suggestions for setting up a classroom library to promote pleasure reading, as well as a checklist for assessing each student during the informal conference is included.
- “Explode a Moment” is a protocol for giving a baseline writing assessment during the first week of school that will provide valuable information about your students literacy as well as an instructional plan which sets students up for a successful first writing experience.
- “Back to School Writing Basics” is a series of lessons you can teach during the first few weeks of school that walk students through the full writing process at the sentence level from pre-writing to drafting, revision, editing and publishing. This low-stress approach will allow you a venue for reviewing writing basics while students have fun writing sentences about familiar topics.
